Great organ works

Konstantin Volostnov’s CD

Graphic designPackaging

Client

Organist Konstantin Volostnov. The musician’s discography includes over 20 CDs released in Russia, Germany, and England, featuring a diverse repertoire — from Bach and Mendelssohn to works by contemporary composers. Also created for the musician was a website.

Objective

To design packaging for the CD with a multilingual booklet that visually unites academic classical music, architecture, and the historical organ tradition.

Release Date

2013

the IDEA

Classic Form for Classical Music

The visual solution is built on restrained typography, architectural photography, and strict black-and-white graphics. The design does not compete with the music, but works as its visual continuation: a traditional packaging form, a clear hierarchy of information, and a minimum of decorative elements.

the RECORDING

Album History and Recording Location

The album was recorded in July 2013 on the historic Harrison & Harrison organ (built in 1936) at St Leonard’s Church in Hythe, Kent, UK.

In Konstantin Volostnov’s discography, the album is listed as Great Organ Works, Vol. 2, catalog number KVCD-007; recording duration — 78 minutes 54 seconds.

the PACKAGING

Jewel Case, Booklet, and Visual System

A classic jewel case was selected for the release — standard plastic packaging for an audio CD with a transparent lid.

The cover features photographs of the interior and architectural details of St Leonard’s Church, linking the musical material with the space in which the album was recorded.

The set includes all print components, including a multi-page booklet with information about the artist, the recording, and the musical program in two languages.

10 YEARS LATER

FROM PHYSICAL TO DIGITAL

Transitioning the Project from Physical Medium to Digital

In 2024, the record label “Melodiya” released a digital album “Romantic Organ”, based on the 2013 recording. The album is available on major streaming platforms including Apple Music, Yandex Music, YouTube Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, and others.

Thus, a work originally created for a physical CD release received its continuation years later in the digital environment.
