Konstantin Volostnov’s CD

Client

Organist Konstantin Volostnov. The musician’s discography includes over 20 CDs released in Russia, Germany, and the UK, featuring a diverse repertoire — from Bach and Mendelssohn to works by contemporary composers. A website was also created for the musician.

Objective

To design a CD sleeve for an archival live album, bringing together recordings from 2003–2009, made on four different organs.

Release Date

2009

the IDEA

A Documentary Archive

Unlike a studio album, Organ Live Album is a kind of “archival” compilation of live concert recordings made in different venues and on different organs.

To place one specific instrument on the cover would mean distorting the essence of the release, depriving the disc of the feeling of a live, documentary moment.

That is why the cover was transformed into a continuous mosaic of reportage fragments.

the RECORDING

4 organs · 4 halls · 6 years

Organ Live Album is one of the most unusual projects in Konstantin Volostnov’s discography. The recordings were made between 2003–2009 on organs that differ significantly in origin, design, and aesthetics:
· 2003-2005 — Small and Great Halls of the Moscow Conservatory;
· 2007–2009 — Roman Catholic Cathedral in Moscow;
· 2008 — Concert Hall of Organ and Chamber Music in Kirov.

The disc itself was released in 2009 under the catalog number KVCD-004.

the PACKAGING

Disc — Presentation

A compact CD cardboard sleeve was chosen for the release, which simultaneously serves as the musician’s business card.

The black-and-white color scheme of the sleeve equalizes photographs taken in different halls, under varying lighting, and with different equipment, bringing them together into a unified whole.

The CD itself is executed in a radically minimalist style — pulling the disc out of the “overloaded” sleeve, the listener gets a visual pause before listening.
